Rolf Oppliger, describes firewall as a "blockade" between an internal privately owned network (such as an intarnet) that is believed to be secure and an external network, such as Internet, which is not assumemed to be secure. The metaphor of a blockade is perhaps useful, but others have suggested that a firewall can be compared more accurately to a "moat around a castle."
